Description

Woodsy Studio develops visual novels and adventure games with a focus on complex characters, compelling romances, and quality story-lines.

History

Early History

Woodsy Studio is led by a solo woman developer, Jenny Gibbons, who began as a novelist and screenwriter. After earning a BFA in Writing for Cinema and Television from the University of Southern California, she moved out of Hollywood to explore artistic pursuits beyond film. Jenny Gibbons further developed her craft in art, music, and programming, until she completed and released her first visual novel in 2013: Serafina's Saga. Her partner Malcolm Pierce collaborated with her on the next project, an experimental sci-fi visual novel called Quantum Conscience. This game eschewed traditional choices in the narrative; instead, the story branched depending on the player's use of a mind-reading ability. For Quantum Conscience, Jenny enlisted her sister, artist Michelle Hagewood, for abstract backgrounds which emphasized the uncertainty and confusion of the hero's environment. The scope and potential of Woodsy Studio kept growing.

Expansion and New Game Engines

After 2015, Woodsy Studio released several more titles, became an official LLC, and explored many additional gameplay mechanics. Serafina's Crown returned to the world of Serafina's Saga with new characters and a minigame for debating other nobles within the royal fantasy setting. It was the first Woodsy Studio title to feature voice acting and released on Steam in May, 2015. Next came the Echoes of the Fey series, a high fantasy detective story that further expanded the limits of a visual novel by allowing expoloration between visual novel segments. Episode 1: The Fox's Trail released in 2016, developed in GameMaker Studio. They switched next to Unreal Engine 4 to incorporate 3d environments and more robust gameplay elements. With new visual flair, more voice acting, and a rich world of characters and history, they released a prequel (Episode 0: The Immolation) and sequel (Episode 2: The Last Sacrament) in the next few years.

Additional Titles and Consoles

Next, Woodsy Studio went on to create a humorous mobile otome game about romancing angels (miraclr: Divine Dating Sim) and a creepy romantic drama about getting trapped in a rural town of late 90's Missouri with vampires and a serial killer. Crimson Spires released on Steam in 2020, before Woodsy Studio partnered with EastAstiaSoft to release the game on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Serafina's Saga: Awakened

Following the release of Crimson Spires in 2020, Jenny Gibbons resumed the mantle of solo developer at Woodsy Studio. She decided to return to her very first visual novel, Serafina's Saga, and reimagine it as a new and better otome-style adventure. Working again in Unreal Engine 4, the game will include lush 3D environments, animated character portraits with the incorporation of Creature software, voice acting from an expanded cast, dynamic music via FMOD, and a rewritten script with four major story branches and character romances.
