Ten Questions with Voice Actor David Dixon: Part 1 of 2

David Dixon has voiced Woodsy Studio characters for 10 years, going all the way back to the first voice acted Woodsy Studio’s project, the Serafina’s Saga animation (Arken Jeridar). Now we take a moment to talk to David about his overall experiences in voice acting and his own personal passions. This is part 1 of 2 in the interview with David (see Part 2 here). You can listen to the vocal recording of his response to each question, and/or read the transcribed text. Enjoy!

1. Your history of voicing Arken goes back all the way to the original Serafina’s Saga animation and you are reprising the role in the upcoming Woodsy Studios game, Serafina’s Saga: Awakened. Has your approach to the role changed over time?

Hello there, I am David Dixon and I voice Arken (Serafina’s Saga: Awakened, Serafina’s Crown).

Yeah, for sure! After seeing more of his development from the end of the original games to the new installment I see new angles of his past so I’m definitely trying to push the sorrow and bitterness more, but also have a bit more fun with the sarcasm. I see he uses that as a deflection or even a wall when he’s uncomfortable. I also think the passage of time and changes in my life are helping me wade deeper in the truly emotional moments with Serafina.

I think that if I had to the narrow it down I’d say I’m kind of giving my performance HD Plus remaster, but yeah I’m definitely trying to use more of what I’ve learned as an actor since then to just really delve deep and really make Arken just come to life more. It’s one of these things as an actor you’re always looking back at your old performances and in the moment you could be like “Yeah oh that’s great I love this.” But then sometimes when you go back and you’ve learned so much since you look back and like “I would have done that differently, ah crap oh no I would have done that differently!” So kind of a bit of that, yeah. I just really want to push forward with what I’ve done in the past and just really flesh out Arken.

2. You have voiced villains in two Woodsy Studio games: Picard in Serafina’s Crown and Thomas “Tip” Wagner in Crimson Spires. What is your process for connecting with villains, and how much did it vary between these two?

I definitely like to think of what makes them tick in their everyday lives. With Tip I see him as a man driven by fear and paranoia. Now saying he’s driven by fear I don’t mean for him to be sympathetic at all, I’m more focusing on the ignorance that comes with fear, you know. He’s a bad dude in a very sadly relevant to today’s atmosphere villain. He’s a bully who wants to feel important, like he has the answers, so I latch on to that want. With all the goings on in that particular setting he goes from being a nothing and to now just looking for an opportunity to say, “Yeah yeah hey I feel seen I’m important.” But as I said earlier you look at the fact that he is a bully he is a jerk and so I’m layering that on to some of those natural wants of wanting to be heard, wanting to be seen. But also, I’m the bad guy, I’m a jerk, so I’m having that be corrupted into wanting to lord it over people be like, “Ah you don’t know anything, I know something, why should we trust you, you’re an outsider, I’ve been here all this time, and I know what’s what, so let’s put the microscope on you!” and I take it from there.

With Picard, I had fun with his hedonism and treated him like a bit of a brat, if I’m being honest. We’ve all had days when we feel we’re owed a bit of indulgence, a bit of extra pepperoni on our slice, a bit of Grace when we woke up before our alarm and it’s raining out and the forecast said it would be sunny. I took all of that and cranked it to 11, to the point where he’s basically saying “Let’s all indulge, let’s all get into a fun party!” And I have him get into a bit of a scary hissy fit where people just can’t drop what they’re doing and indulge. They can’t just say “Okay you know it’s time for a party I have work I have to deal with a sick relative.” It’s all of that where people have different motivations, different plans, different amounts of freedom in time, and he doesn’t see that, so he takes all the realistic feel of “Okay hey I want to have some fun,” “hey let’s all have a good time” and he turns that into just being angry, and just insulted. “Wait, you don’t have time to stop what you’re doing to have a good time with me?” And I crank it all the way up to a godly level so yeah I think it’s all about finding that little bit of an anchor.

In high school, my theater teacher–Mr Slate–talked about how the key to playing any type of character is finding some of those anchors so you know what drives all of us. So he would always mention, and it’s always stuck with me, you don’t have to be a murderer to be angry enough to murder somebody. If you’re playing a villain you don’t have to go out and do something horrible. You can just think of what made you that angry, and then add on layers and layers and then, you know, you’re cooking.

3. You voiced Heremon ir-Caldy in Woodsy Studio’s Echoes of the Fey series. Unlike most roles you’ve had in Woodsy Studios games Heremon becomes a romantic interest for the main character over the course of the series. Arken also became a romantic interest for Odell in Serafina’s Crown. Does this change your approach to voicing a character?

Oh yeah, *laugh*, a bit. I’m not used to romantic relationships in real life so I really focus a lot more and I really put a lot into wanting to get it right. I’m a lot more in my head when I’m prepping versus when I’m just playing like a salesman or something like that. I’m thinking a lot more of am I connecting well enough to the love interest? Am I being convincing? Is the audience buying what I’m putting out? Do they like what I’m going to be doing this performance? I’m having a lot more scrutiny on myself to make sure that yeah this is entertaining and this is authentic and this is doing justice to what the author, in this case Jenny (Gibbons), would be writing. It’s a different type of challenge but it’s a good challenge.

4. What are your favorite types of roles to play?

Villains are fun since I get to push the contrast between myself and–depending on the type of villain–I get to be hammy. It could be a lot of fun to just MWAH-HA-HA all throughout the production. I also really like playing mentor types and heroes. I really want to get a chance to play more idealistic heroes like a Superman type. I think those are incredibly fun, but challenging. You really have to sell the optimism and heroism without it feeling phony. We’ve all seen hero characters pop up in a cartoon show and not really like a superhero show but like something like a spoof, like a kind of like Angry Beavers or in Ren and Stimpy you had Powdered Toast Man. A lot of times you know it’s hokey, it’s fun, but it’s not sincere and I’ve got to go in a little bit of rant so you’ll have to excuse me.

I often times see people saying Superman is boring, but I don’t agree at all. I find the concept of one of the most powerful beings choosing not just to save the world, but taking a second to sit down next to you and ask if you’re okay and if you’ve had breakfast. I find that fascinating. The guy can lift mountains, but he stops to listen to people and he truly fully loves his neighbors. It’s not just PR. You know it’s all of that because his heart is just that big. Some of my favorite moments of Superman like in the media, and comics, animated movies… some of the most interesting moments are when he’s just not doing impossible odds but just sitting there and listening to somebody and like really really just caring about them and being like, “Okay I want to help, I want to make sure that you’re okay.”

I mean sometimes it’s like more emotional stuff and then sometimes it can even be lighter stuff. There’s times where he kind of gets into like a dad-like mode and he was just kind of floating there one time and a whole bunch of these guys were robbing a store and they just all just stood, looked at their guns, put them down, took off their masks and just turned themselves in.

On the more heartfelt but still just as impactful vein, there was an anniversary issue where all kinds of different people were saying how much they loved Superman. But the one that stuck out to me was there was a guy talking about how he was a career criminal in Metropolis and Gotham and other places, but he just kept running into Superman and Superman was like, “You can do better than this. I believe in you.” Eventually, it took him a while, but he got his life together, rehabilitated himself and just lived on the straight and narrow path, and I thought that’s a cool thing.

I mean you have all kinds of things like awesome super battles and superpowers but it’s something a bit special and different to see someone who’s like, “Yeah I get it, hey maybe you’re not in the best place there’s a reason why you did this, you signed up. Not everyone is as privileged as me. I’m a super-powered alien and I can do this but I believe you can be better and I want you to be better.” And that’s kind of the core of Superman for me, where he just absolutely loves everybody, he sees the best in everyone and he wants everyone to get that second chance.

To me that is an amazing character and I would absolutely love to get a chance to really juggle that where it’s like, okay the weight of the world’s on your shoulders but you’re still balancing being a guy who’s fighting for truth and justice: on the the lower levels as a journalist, on the higher levels as a guy who can move planets and mountains. All of those different things coming together to just make a really compelling narrative where it’s not about, okay can he punch this guy out? Can he stop this Armada of bad guys? It’s like yeah, okay, is he going to save the day on a personal level? Is he gonna be there, is he gonna help you through a terrible day? Is he gonna be a friend? I love that idea and yeah, more of that. I’d love to try more of that. It’s fun and compelling.

5. What aspects make a role extra challenging or difficult?

That depends. Sometimes it can be the subject matter. How dark is the villain going to get with their head space? What am I going to have to… What lines am I gonna have to cross? What is going to be informing my performance? What’s going to be driving the anger, the hate, the bitterness? Then there’s other things, where: is the performance itself gonna be challenging? Am I going to be slipping between English and a fictional language? Am I going to be doing a role where I’m playing dual roles?

There was a project where the game took place in the past and you saw me as a younger character, but there were chunks of the game that flashed decades forward and I was an old man. And so it was interesting to be balancing those two performances. But there are other times where some things can just be oh it’s kind of like it’s a marathon rather than just kind of like a jog. It’s like okay, there’s
gonna be a lot I’m having to do, or they’re just even things that are just surprisingly complex. Is this character going to sing? Is this character presented as upbeat and happy, but they’re hiding a secret, they’re hiding sorrow, they’re hiding guilt or shame, and you have to have the audience start to kind of clue in. So that could be another challenge where you’re having to let the audience know there’s something about this character, but you can’t make it too obvious or you can’t make it too subtle that no one picks it up.

So, yeah! *Laugh.* Every role is a challenge, even if it’s a something you consistently come back to like a series, you can have an episode of that just throws a curve ball. It’s a lot of fun. That’s one of the reasons I love acting. There’s just so many things you can get involved with from project to project, from episode to episode, from chapter to chapter.

Seeking Voice Talent for Serafina’s Saga: Awakened *CLOSED*

*UPDATE:* All roles are cast!

Thank you so much to everyone who auditioned! It was a very hard decision because there were so many great auditions! The roles have been cast as follows:

And reprising their old roles:

  • Arken Jeridar: David Dixon
  • Reuben Jeridar: Jacob Anderson

About the Game

Serafina’s Saga: Awakened is a complete remake of the original Serafina’s Saga, released first in 2013 then remastered in 2014. The new version is an otome-style visual novel made in UE4. The script will be mostly rewritten, the art entirely redrawn, and the music remixed. Intrigue, romance, and drama combine in a rich fantasy world with animated character sprites and lush 3D environments.

Young Serafina has spent her entire life alone in the jungle with only her guardian, a mysterious man named Arken, as company. When Arken is captured by a group of soldiers and carried away, Serafina must venture outside the forest to save him. On her journey to the heart of the kingdom, Serafina discovers a whole new world beyond the shadows of the jungle.

As Serafina, you will mingle with noble warriors and salacious nobles to infiltrate the royalty of Castle Krondolee and save Arken. But in the process, you will become entangled in a wide web of relationships, schemes, and beliefs that may set you on a different path than the one you began. Learn the dark truth of Arken’s past and thus Serafina’s. Decide whom to trust, fight, or love. Your choice will change the fate of the entire kingdom.

Serafina as she appears in Serafina’s Saga: Awakened

Expected Work and Payment

Payment will be $0.10 per scripted word, with a minimum of $0.25 per line (for instance, a very short line or sound instead of a word).

*Side Note
This project is early in development. Please be aware that batches of scene dialogue might be requested in gradual stages, such as once every few months over the course of a year or longer as the game nears completion.

Rating/Maturity

This game will contain mild adult language, violence, and sexual themes. Romance lines might get a little racy. I expect it to get rated somewhere in the Teen category (but I can’t officially say yet for sure).

Audition Process

Please record the included audition lines for the roles that interest you and send them in either .wav or .mp3 format to jenny (at) woodsy-studio (dot) com. Please include your name and the character name in the files, such as “YourName_CharacterName.mp3”. Multiple takes and styles are highly encouraged so I have a good sense of your range. The last day to audition will be Sunday, April 3, 2022.

WHAT I LOOK FOR WHEN CASTING:
When I cast voice actors, what I care about most is acting ability and emotional expression. This is more important to me than vocal range, accent, or other secondary details. Although I generally don’t judge your audition on a resume or past roles, I *am* impressed when voice actors to have theater experience, so feel free to mention that if you have it.

As for demonstrating your ability to act, try to fully embody the character your voicing and let their personality shine through every line. Major bonus points if you can somehow help me see the character in a new way I never even thought of before. Err on the side of feeding an audition line too much emotion rather than too little; I always know I can ask you to tone it down, but I don’t always know whether you can kick it up a notch (and do it well).

SIDE NOTE ABOUT ACCENTS:
Due to this game’s setting of a diverse fantasy world, the accent of some characters can be whatever sounds best. Those characters will have the note “Accent: Optional.” You could do normal American, British, Australian… or whatever strikes your fancy as feeling good for that character. That said, please don’t be too sloppy or or extreme with using accents to the point it distracts; the focus should still be on the emotion of the character.

Some characters have had previous voice actors from the original animation. If so, it might be helpful for you to listen to the previous voice actors as a starting point. But don’t feel obligated to copy them exactly. I’m open to new interpretations of the characters if they’re good ones!

CHARACTERS!

Nikolaos Perin

Nikolaos Perin

(Male, Love Interest) Nikolaos is a playful spirit trapped in the harsh role of a Royal Scout in King Kallias’s army. He descends from the noble House Perin, so he’s obligated to some involvement in the royal complications of Castle Krondolee. But if he could, he’d actually spend his life as a theater actor, performing dramatic roles on stage! He’s compassionate and light-hearted by nature, but he has a slight dark side: in a conflict, he’ll take the easy way out to avoid more trouble, whether it’s running away or deceiving the people around him.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Playful, enthusiastic, but annoyed when people make his life more difficult
AGE: 20s
ACCENT: British or American (you can hear the original voice actor for Nikolaos here: https://youtu.be/ZMVwmMJrCbQ?t=706 but don’t feel like you have to copy it, just use it for inspiration)

***********Audition Lines************
Line 1:
(playful, flirty) “Seems to me like you need to relax. Let’s get out of here. How about I give you a private tour of the castle?”
Line 2:
(flustered, angry) “Hey! Any more of that and I will break this thing, got it?”
Line 3:
(nervous, dodging) “Oh, that’s just servants’ gossip. I bet the story got passed around and exaggerated. You know how it is! *nervous laugh*”

Jezu Grandil

Jezu Grandil

(Male, Love Interest) Jezu Grandil is the General of the Royal Guard and he takes this role very seriously. His father died on duty when Jezu was very young. Jezu now wants to continue his family’s military tradition, but he wants to win and survive. This can lead to Jezu being cold, ruthless, and unforgiving on the outside. But underneath his harsh demeanor, he has a fragile heart that never wants to see his loved ones suffer.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Dignified, Proud, Often cold, but occasionally that cracks and he shows his soft/caring side
AGE: Late 20s
ACCENT: Optional

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(cold, haughty) “Becoming a member of the Royal Guard is no simple matter. But you’re free to try, as freely as you might fail.”
Line 2:
(angry, threatening) “You are not ready for this, fool. Make a single misstep and I’ll smear you through the dirt.”
Line 3:
(guilty, upset) “I made a mistake. I never should have put you in that position. I deserve… to be punished.”

Kallias Jeridar

Kallias Jeridar

(Male/Gender-Fluid) Made King of Darzia at a young age, Kallias always intended to do what was best for the kingdom. But his idea of “what’s best” is flooding the kingdom with gold at the expense of everything else: including food, shelter, and all the things one would usually spend gold to obtain. Kallias descends from Mallion, the god of greed, and his personal greed for gold is insatiable. So he remains blind to his country’s starvation while he tirelessly works to acquire more gold.

Beyond his greed and kingly pride, Kallias still possesses a child-like personality that never quite grew up. He’s quick to throw a tantrum or chase after a promising prize. He can be playful, friendly, and humorous–when he’s not busy starving the country.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Spoiled, Playful, Greedy
AGE: 20s
ACCENT: British (you can hear the original voice actor for Kallias here: https://youtu.be/ZMVwmMJrCbQ?t=884 but don’t feel like you have to copy it, just use it for inspiration)

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(flustered)  “No, no, no! I’ve counted each one of them several times now. And every time, I come up with a different number!”
Line 2:
(joyful, excited) “Well well well! Isn’t this a surprise! Show me what you can do! How about one of those Wolven dance… thingies.”
Line 3:
(flippant sadness, disdain) “Too bad for the Elborns, divine magic was not enough to save their lives.”

Xavier Wolven

Xavier Wolven

(Male) Descended from Belazar, god of anger and death, Xavier is a devoted Wolven assassin. His passion is to kill and he’s very damn good at it. He’s not exactly the type of person you invite to a party–unless you want someone dead.

Xavier is not always just a hired hand, of course. He has his own needs, desires, and grievances. Right now, his desire is to kill Arken Jeridar. He thinks Arken destroyed the best chance of love he ever had with a woman named Vivian Trell. That was 18 years ago… but Xavier’s not the type to let go of a grudge.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Dangerous, discerning, Cold and callous until sparked to anger
AGE: Unknown, appears to be in 40s/50s
ACCENT: Optional

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(Cold, threatening) “Do you know who I am? I could slit your throat right now and no one would challenge me.”
Line 2:
(annoyed, then uncertain/interested) “I don’t want tea. I want you to leave me alone until–… is that ginseng?”
Line 3:
(angry, hurt, passionate) “It has to do with EVERYTHING! You miserable pondscum. You seduced her. You won her affection. You made her believe you cared about more than the key. You LIED.”

Belatrix Grandil

Belatrix Grandil

(Female, Possible Love Interest) Belatrix is the Commander of the Royal Guard and she’s good at her job. Like her younger brother Jezu, she takes her role seriously and works to maintain the noble military traditions of House Grandil. Unlike Jezu, however, she harbors some doubts about the current structure of Castle Krondolee. She is a personal friend of King Kallias, but as such, she also questions his ability to rule the country. Most of the time, she keeps her doubts silent, and leads the army ruthlessly under Kallias’s supervision. But if she sees a chance to change the world for the better, she might take it.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Strong, proud, ruthless
AGE: Late 20s/early 30s
ACCENT: Optional (you can hear the original voice actor for Belatrix here: https://youtu.be/ZMVwmMJrCbQ?t=945 but don’t feel like you have to copy it, just use it for inspiration)

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(cold, ruthless) “The Grand Traitor is the scum of this planet. He has no honor. No loyalty. No principles. He cannot be ‘talked’ to. The truth must be wrested out of him, but carefully, like pulling the heart from an animal before it stops beating.”
Line 2:
(Uncertain, In Denial) “That can’t be true. The queen’s daughter did not survive. I only took up this search to prove that.”
Line 3:
(angry, taunting) “COWARD! You would spy on us from the shadows, then flee when you fail to hide yourself?”

Valerie Sparkov

Valerie Sparkov

(Female, Romance Interest) Valerie is a farmer living on the outskirts of Darzia–in more ways than one. She is a free spirit who has never “fit in” anywhere, so she often keeps to herself and dances to her own tune. After meeting Serafina, she’s drawn to follow her to Castle Krondolee and embark upon a new adventure with her. But Valerie has no set agenda of her own. If anything, she just likes to throw chaos upon the rigid nobility and see what happens next.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Mischievous, Cheerful, Playful, maybe a little crazy
AGE: 20s
ACCENT: Optional

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(happy, flirty) “I’m happy I met you, jungle princess. I like a little danger in my life.”
Line 2: (uncertain, whimsical) “And what will I get in return? Can you give me joy? Can you give me sustenance, for my body or soul?”
Line 3:
(annoyed, mischievous) “This castle is a hornet’s nest. But I’ve dealt with those before. I think it’s time you and I did some swatting.”

Instructions (Refrain)

Once again, please record the included audition lines for the role that interests you and send them in either .wav or .mp3 format to jenny (at) woodsy-studio (dot) com. Multiple takes and styles are highly encouraged so I have a good sense of your range. The last day to audition will be Sunday, April 3, 2022.

Seeking Voice Actors for Alpha-Stage Crimson Spires!

**UPDATE: AUDITIONS CLOSED**

Thanks so much to everyone who auditioned! Here is the selected cast:

August Flynn: Bradley Gareth
Julian Bataille: Davell Toles
Liam Bataille: Gabriel James
Bradley Jones: Jordan Harrelson

Charlotte Bataille: Amber Leigh
Madeleine Gray: Bern Aniceto
Stacy Grenier: Sara Secora

About Crimson Spires

Made in UE4, Crimson Spires blends horror with otome-style romance. First-person character control allows you to explore the stark town of Bataille, MO–a 3D environment inspired by PS2-era horror games–while experiencing an interactive story.

The small mining town of Bataille, Missouri has been cordoned off from the outside world for six months. The inhabitants have no idea why. All they know is that ever since the so-called “Contingency,” planes no longer fly overhead, strange creatures have been glimpsed beyond the perimeter, and large mechanical towers gun down anyone who tries to escape. As Sheriff Erika Wright searches for the truth, she must listen to the advice of a serial killer, mingle with extreme conspiracy theorists, and negotiate with vampires.

Expected Work and Payment

For now, we are simply gathering expression lines for each character. These are short, expressive lines of dialogue that occasionally play when a character speaks to punctuate their current emotion. Payment is $0.50 per expression line, including all takes. Each character will probably have between 30-100 expression lines.

*Important Note!*
Please be aware that this casting is considered preliminary. Due to the project’s early stage of development, our immediate plans are only to record approximately 30-100 expression lines for each character to have in place for demos, pitching to publishers, etc. Our hope is to eventually commission scene dialogue with the same cast, but that is not guaranteed, and will be renegotiated in the future according to budget and project needs.

Rating/Maturity

This game will contain adult language, violence, and sexual themes. We are not yet rated officially, but we expect to land in the Mature/R rating category. There will be F-bombs. Romance scenes might get a little racy, but not explicit. Please only audition if you are comfortable with that!

The last day to audition will be Saturday, Sept 29, 2018.

WHAT I LOOK FOR WHEN CASTING:
When I cast voice actors, what I care about most is your ability to act. This is more important to me than vocal range, accent, or other secondary details. Although I generally don’t judge your audition on a resume or past roles, I find that it’s beneficial for voice actors to have theater experience, so feel free to mention that.

You will see a note that some characters have American/Slight Southern accent. Technically, those characters would have a Missouri accent, which is like a softer version of the typical Southern accent. I’m flexible on whether the final casting choice uses the accent, though; I’ll select based on acting ability and capturing the character more than the technicality of an accent. If you can, try a take each way!

CHARACTERS!

August Flynn

(Human, Male, Romance Interest) Before the towers rose, August Flynn was a philosophy professor accused of 7 murders, coined the “Heartbreaker” for removing the victims’ hearts. Erika doesn’t believe his claims of innocence, but she might need his expertise against darker forces.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Playful, dangerous, can be charming, but slightly unhinged
AGE: Early 30s
ACCENT: American

***********Audition Lines************
Line 1:
(playful, charming) “Do my hands look like they belong to such a cold-blooded killer?”
Line 2:
(threatening) “Truly, Agent, I would not advise trying to shoot me in these circumstances.”
Line 3:
(haughty) “You’re trapped in a prison far worse than mine, Sheriff Wright. The prison of your own mind.”

Julian Bataille

(Vampire, Male, Romance Interest) Julian Bataille excels at acting calm, polite, and practical in most situations. He claims to maintain order in Bataille with his wealth and influence. He does like to maintain order and peace, but in the end, he cares most about accumulating power and control.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Calm, collected, very charming, but can be dangerous/threatening when opposed
AGE: Late 20s/early 30s
ACCENT: American

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(charming) “It’s a shame we don’t see you more often, Sheriff Wright. May… may I call you Erika?”
Line 2:
(cold, threatening) “I think the easiest thing for you to do right now would be to drop this whole issue and return to the police station.”
Line 3:
(angry) “Don’t be pathetic. Your decisions are your own. Don’t blame your poor life choices on your sister.”

Liam Bataille

(Vampire, Male, Romance Interest) Adopted by the Bataille family at a young age, Liam has always struggled to feel like he fits in with the family. He’s easily the nicest member of the Batailles with an optimistic attitude, and he regularly urges to Erika to relax and have fun. But his loyalty is frequently torn between his personal virtue and his desire to please Julian and Charlotte.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Kind, optimistic, tries to be laid-back
AGE: Late 20s/early 30s
ACCENT: American

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(sweet, charming)  “Oh, maybe I can show you around the mansion sometime! Beautiful building. Even has an indoor swimming pool!”
Line 2:
(reassuring) “Good point. I’m sure Charlotte will think of something. She always does.”
Line 3:
(upset/angry) “I will. I see now I never should have tried to help you at all. I thought I would win your respect. But you’ll never respect me, will you?”

Bradley Jones

(Human, Male, Deputy US Marshal) When you wake up in the morning and see the star of a 80’s action flick in the mirror, you tend to act like it. Jones is no different. Cocky and carefree until sparked to anger. Has risen quickly, in status if not rank, but not because of his careful police work.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Works hard but knows how to play, kind, charming, a little cocky
AGE: Early 30s
ACCENT: American

***********Audition Lines************

Line 1:
(relieved) “Thanks for the help, Agent Wright. I’m… I’m so glad you’re here.”
Line 2:
(charming) “I guess until the cavalry arrives, it’s just the two of us.”
Line 3:
(angry) “I’m not going to sit here and wait for them. Not after what that monster did to Gant!”

Madeleine (“Maddy”) Gray

(Human, Female, Romance Interest) Growing up as a lesbian in a conservative, rural town often made Maddy feel like an outsider in her own home. The Batailles were the only people who fully accepted her, so she feels loyal to them. But as she learns the real truth of the Batailles, she’ll have to fight for the greater good.

OVERALL PERSONALITY: Cheerful, can-do attitude, passionate
AGE: Late 20s/early 30s
ACCENT: American/Slight Southern

Seeking Voice Actors for “The Last Sacrament”

****AUDITIONS NOW CLOSED****
Thanks to everyone who auditioned! Here is the resulting cast:
Nikolai – Christopher Vitemb
Katerina – Sara Secora
******************************************

About the Echoes of the Fey

Echoes of the Fey is an English-language visual novel series that combines the magic of high fantasy with the mystery of the classic detective novel. You play as Sofya Rykov, a private investigator operating in a town on the contentious border between the Humans and Leshin (Elves). While her job is to uncover secrets, Sofya has a dangerous secret of her own: unlike other Humans, she can use magic. It’s a handy trick for solving cases – in the rare instances she can control it.

About Episode 2: The Last Sacrament

The Last Sacrament will be the next installment of the ongoing series. Sofya’s loyalty grows divided when politics clash over the town’s water system. Her childhood love, who also happens to be the Emperor’s daughter, seeks Sofya’s protection from mysterious threats. But a ruthless politician seeks a fourth drop of Eszther’s Sacrament — the consumption of which is the greatest heresy against the Krovakyn Church — and he will go to any lengths to ensure that Sofya delivers it to him.

Released episodes:

Episode 0: The Immolation
Episode 1: The Fox’s Trail

Expected Work

The amount of recording needed is not yet set in stone. Shortly after choosing the cast, we will request a recording of expression lines (30-60 short lines of expressive dialogue). After that, we will request some scene dialogue over the next few months as our budget allows.

Rating/Maturity

This game will contain some adult language and sexual themes. However, we expect to remain in the Teen / PG-13 rating category.

Audition Process

Please record the included audition lines for the role that interests you and send them in either .wav or .mp3 format to jenny (at) woodsy-studio (dot) com. Multiple takes and styles are highly encouraged so I have a good sense of your range. Auditions will remain open until March 12, 2017.

Katerina Konstantinova Lapidus

  • Female
  • American accent
  • Appears both as an adult (20s) and teenager (about 13 years)

Katerina has a kind and empathetic nature, but she also grew up as the daughter of the Emperor during a time of warfare. Her kind nature is frequently in conflict with her need to firmly represent her father’s interests and crush her opponents. She rejoices in any opportunity she finds to kick back and behave like an ordinary young woman. She hates being called “princess” or any other unnecessary flattery. This is why she enjoys Sofya’s company so much. Sofya has never cared for politics, and always knows how to forget about all problems and have fun.

Katerina will mostly appear as an adult in the story, but there will also be flashbacks to her as a young teenager meeting Sofya for the first time. Therefore there are audition lines for both adult and teenaged Katerina (around 13 years old).

Please send lines for both adult and teenage Katerina, as she will appear as both in different parts of the story. Teenage Katerina should sound younger/higher-pitched.

Adult Katerina Audition Lines
KATERINA (angry): All of this was about a photograph?
SOFYA: I don’t know. But, Kat, take a deep breath. You’re okay.
KATERINA: I’m sorry, Sofyuska. I just… I had no idea that this might actually happen. When I hired you… I didn’t really think…
SOFYA: You didn’t think you were really in danger?
KATERINA: Not real danger! Not like this! I thought they’d throw vegetables at me or tag my carriage.

Teenage Katerina Audition Lines
SOFYA: Thank you, Kater– Uh, Lady Lapidus.
YOUNG KATERINA: PLEASE don’t call me that. I’m so sick of everyone sucking up to me.
YOUNG KATERINA: Just call me Kat.
SOFYA: Okay… Kat.
YOUNG KATERINA: Now, if you’re going to be stuck in the castle for the winter, maybe we can at least have some fun.

Nikolai Fyodorovich Melinkov

  • Male
  • American Accent
  • Late 20s/early 30s

Nikolai Fyodorovich Melinkov is the eldest heir of House Melinkov. House Melinkov is one of the wealthiest families of the west and one of the staunchest opponents to Imperial control of the borderlands. They are led by Nikolai’s grandmother, Alma Melinkov. Nikolai is the heir because his father (Alma’s son) died during the war and Alma’s daughter is a church matriarch.

Nikolai never wanted the responsibility of leadership. He is a man who enjoys fine dining and classy entertainment. If he had his way, he would run a theater or prestigious tavern rather than control his family’s domain. He also believes that his dying grandmother, Alma Melinkov, is much better suited to protect the family than he is. For this reason, he will use whatever tools he possesses to extend Alma’s life and protect the family’s interests in the meantime–even if that means breaking the most sacred law of the Krovakyn Church and blackmailing Sofya to help him.

Audition Line 1:
NIKOLAI (firm, threatening): You will do as I say, Lady Rykov. My sister has ten copies of this photograph. If I do not wire back to Volgrad with other instructions within the hour, she will send it to Patriarch Arkady here in Vodotsk. However, if you deliver the Sacrament to me, I will destroy every single copy of the picture and the glass impression.
Audition Line 2:
NIKOLAI (determined): We are GOING to build a dam, and we’ll make the Leshin pay for it!

Audition Part 3:  Please include a singing clip!

Character List (Voice Actors Needed)

Below is a list and summary of the most significant characters from Serafina’s Crown. I am excited to announce that this visual novel will have voice acting, and I am currently searching for VAs for everyone on this list except for Arken, Kallias, and Serafina. If you’re interested, go here for more info and audition lines for each character.

odell

Odell Perin

Odell never wanted to live the life of royalty in Castle Krondolee, even though her mother was an important House Leader. She hates politics and prefers to explore the world with no attachments.

When Queen Belatrix dies and Odell’s mother steps down as House Leader of Perin, Odell has no choice but to assume a role of utmost importance in the Darzian government. How she handles her duties depends upon you!
arken

Arken Jeridar

Arken has a dark past, including betraying his own family and raising Serafina Elborn in secrecy. But he has repaired old bridges; most people in the Darzian nobility respect him now, and he serves as an adviser to Odell when she has no one else to turn to. For a reason he’s not eager to share, however, Arken seems intent on preventing Serafina from taking the crown of Darzia.

Learn the full truth of Arken’s past in the free novella, “Grand Traitor.”

serafina

Serafina Elborn

Serafina has come a long way since her childhood in the Darzian jungle. Now she is married to Reuben Jeridar with children, and the crown of Darzia is within her grasp.

As rebels calling themselves the Red Scarves cause trouble throughout Darzia, Serafina seeks the crown so that she can  spread peace and reform. But her husband, Reuben Jeridar, may have a different vision of their future together.

reuben

Reuben Jeridar

Reuben is a man who uses flattery, seduction, and lies to obtain what he wants. A close descendent of Mallion, a god of chaos, Reuben can also change water into wine (literally). He rose from rags to riches and now sits two chairs from the throne of Darzia. The question is: what does he want now that his wife might become Queen?

Many people suspect that Reuben secretly arranged Belatrix’s assassination to free the crown for Serafina. It will be Odell’s responsibility to uncover the truth.

kendal

Kendal Terrace

Kindal is a talented diplomat. Otherwise, he likes to spend as much time lounging or playing relaxing games as possible. In truth, Kindal is a spoiled aristocrat who simply believes that poor people deserve to be poor and that the noble class is truly superior to the lower class. But his desire to have fun and indulge himself can be highly contagious. He survives solely on his friendliness, charm, and ability to diffuse situations by helping people relax.

roza

Roza Pajari

Roza is a powerful warrior, leader of a House secretly affiliated with Belazar (god of wrath). She has no patience for bull shit, but she does enjoy a good challenge. She believes that strength and aggression are the keys to survival, and she would be lost without clinging to such traits at all times.

Roza is determined to prove that Reuben assassinated Queen Belatrix. Might she have her own reasons for wanting to see him fall?

kallias

Kallias Jeridar

Kallias is known to most as the greedy, careless king who led Darzia into economic ruin because he valued gold over natural resources. After his downfall, however, Kallias spent several years secluded on an island with as much gold as he desired. He realized that gold meant nothing without other people to believe in its value. He has now decided to abstain from gold for as long as he can and put the people first. He returns to Darzia a very changed man.

picard

Picard

Picard is technically the god of joy, but don’t let his title fool you. Being joyful does not equate to being nice.

Picard is playful and silly, but he is also sadistic, as well as masochistic. He loves sex and he also loves torture. He’ll try to squeeze pleasure out of any situation. And if something fails to amuse him (rare but possible), he will destroy it. Because he now possesses the power of an ancient deity, who can influence the flow of the winds and the movement of the sun, he’s quite capable of destroying whatever he wishes.

lorenzo

Lorenzo Dugarek

Odell falls in love with Lorenzo when she meets him on her travels away from Darzia. Lorenzo appears to be little more than an idealist Vikand chief who likes swordplay and women. But there does seem to be something special about him, especially once he gives Odell a precious gift in the form of a magical necklace…
